Josef Svoboda (1920-2002) is now considered one of the most important scenographers of the 20th century. His name and working techniques are generally well known in the world of theatre; some of the productions he collaborated on are legendary.

It has been several years since Josef Svoboda passed away and it is becoming more and more obvious that there is a need for an institution that will preserve Josef Svoboda’s legacy. The founding and development of such an institution mainly requires cooperation from the several institutions that Josef Svoboda was associated with  or had a marked influence on, such as the Czech National Theatre, the Laterna Magika (Magic Lantern Theatre) and the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, as well as other Czech and international institutions.
